The NABSS/BAOUKHE Conference on:
Home Education and the Role of Black Supplementary Schools
This was the first NABSS conference and it was in conjunction with the Black and Other UK Home Educators organisation which is run by Rehena Prior. The venue was the Hackney Museum on Saturday 6th June 2009.
The speakers were:
Lorlette Hudson from "One Hand Can't Clap"
She did wonderfully humorous and interactive presentation on her self produced cards with Caribbean proverbs on them, which brought back a few memories to the audience.
Stephen Brookes from "The National Black Boys Can Association" performed an energetic presentation on motivating children to learn.
Tony warner from "Black History Walks" and the "100 Blackmen of London" performed a a very intuitive presentation on identity
Sandra Hurst went through the options available to save money or spend it wisely in the era of so called "credit crunch"
Kandace Chimbiri kept the younger members of the 60 strong audience entertained in a seperate room with her arts crafts and colouring books.
There was a talk from home educators and some young people who have been home educated and their experiences. The law aspects of home education wasesented and was very popular with the audience. The secluded spaces in the museum was taken advantage of for private consultations.
Pablo Imani had the audience and children stretching and breathing with his teachings from Afrikan Yoga which proved to be a very welcome break.
Chinyere Nwobani from "Chi Creations" rounded off the day with lively and humorous West Afrikan stories.
The day was finished off with a Q&A session which mainly involved,by popular request, home education law and the financial aspects.
Thank you very much to the Hackney Museum, the caterers helpers and stall holders and of course to those who turned up in the audience. More conferences will follow due to poplular demand.
