PAWA Preparatory School

43 Mountain cut Freetown Sierra Leone Preamble The Mawina Kouyate Centre was established by sisters of the Pan AfricanWomen's Association (PAWA) in Freetown , Sierra Leone with the support ofsisters organisations in the United States and Britain . The idea came about by sisters in PAWA through constant study, discussion and assessment of the educational plight and suffering of women and children in Africa . The MAWINA KOUYATE CENTRE caters for the relatively poor and deprived children in the western area of Sierra Leone especially those affected by the civil war. The children are introduced to learning the basics of reading, writing andcounting. A stimulation of their imagination and talents through art, poems, songs, videos and childhood games and an introduction to an African centred education. But above all it provides a place full of fun, laughter and play, and a place where they can have a balanced and memorable childhood. The school is growing every year in quantity and quality through the dedication and commitment of sisters and brothers in Sierra Leone and the Diaspora who are all helping financially and with materials. We are in fact struggling to keep up with the demand within the community. The school has three teachers and two caretakers. The centre started operation in September 24th, 2001 with 25 children. We can now boast of 110 active and cheerful children. For these children, between the ages of 2-6 years the day centre provides: o A safe, comfortable and healthy environment for their education o An introduction to learning the basics of reading and counting. o A stimulation of their imagination and talents through art, poems and songs, videos and childhood games o And introducing them to an African-centred education o But above all, it provides a place full of fun, laughter and playand a place where they could have a balanced and memorable childhood.
